Study Abroad

The University of Richmond has linkages with more than 75 distinguished universities and study abroad programs around the world. These study abroad opportunities enhance Richmond's curriculum by offering students a wide variety of courses and experiences. Students can go abroad for a semester, academic year or summer and earn major, minor and elective credits toward graduation. There also are short programs related to specific courses.

At Richmond, we believe that study abroad is most effective when students are integrated into the local educational system and culture. Therefore, most of our semester programs involve direct enrollment in universities abroad, with on-site support provided by the host university's international office.

The Office of International Education's professional staff offer guidance, advising and support throughout the entire study abroad process. The office organizes extensive orientation programs to help prepare students prior to study abroad. Upon return from study abroad, the office organizes activities to help reintegrate students into the University community and to identify opportunities for continuing international education on campus and in the community.

Most of the semester abroad programs charge Richmond tuition only, as fees for room and meals are paid by the student while abroad. Financial aid and Richmond scholarships are transferred to our semester programs abroad. Additionally, a travel allowance is provided for all students participating in the semester abroad programs. With advance planning, study abroad advisers can help students identify additional internal and external funding sources. With the exception of places such as London and Paris, the cost of living abroad is generally similar to Richmond.
