School of Arts & Sciences

You're always asking questions and searching for explanations. You seek an education that satisfies your curiosity. You'll find that in the School of Arts and Sciences, where all Richmond students start their academic journey. As a student in the School of Arts and Sciences, you will:

  • Choose from interdisciplinary majors, minors and concentrations grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. While you won't be required to declare a major until the spring of the sophomore year, if you are ready to start taking classes in your intended major, you may do so from the first year.

  • Learn from accomplished teacher-scholar faculty who are committed to teaching. Of our full-time faculty, 98 percent hold a doctorate or terminal degree (there are no teaching assistants at Richmond).

  • Participate fully in classroom discussions that stimulate your mind and challenge your beliefs—classes at Richmond go beyond the traditional lecture.

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in collaboration with your professors. This option is available to all students regardless of major.

  • Interact one-on-one with your professors. With small class sizes (the average is 18 students) and low student-faculty ratio (10:1), personal attention isn't just a possibility—it's a sure thing.

  • Have access to world-class facilities, including a new Social Science Center, renovated Gottwald Center for the Sciences, the Modlin Center for the Arts, 20 teaching laboratories, more than 50 student-faculty research laboratories and four libraries.
