Transfer Students

The process of transferring from one university to another is a daunting task. It requires a great deal of research in order to make the right choice. This page is intended to simplify the process of entering the University of Richmond. Because the admission process is different for every student, and many students have unique circumstances, you may have individual questions that are not answered here, so we hope that you will feel free to contact the Office of Admission. A member of the admission committee will be glad to help you.

Eligibility for Transfer Admission

Transfer candidates must have at least 24 semester hours completed at another college or university in order to be considered for transfer admission at the University of Richmond. Students may apply for admission before 24 hours are completed, but coursework must be finished by the time the student plans to enroll at Richmond. Richmond does not accept transfers in the middle of the freshman year.

Admission Profile
The admission process for both first-year and transfer admission to Richmond is selective. Students are evaluated for transfer admission on the basis of several criteria.

Transfer of Credits
The ability to transfer credit into a new school is one of several factors that will be important for all transfer students. No one wants to lose significant credit when they transfer. There are several things we do at Richmond to facilitate a smooth transfer of credit.

Housing
Another issue of frequent concern among transfer students is campus housing. The University of Richmond is almost entirely a residential campus, and it is our philosophy that to truly become integrated into the University community, it is ideal for new transfer students to live on campus. Generally the Office of Admission makes every effort to enroll only as many students as University housing can accommodate. However, in some cases, there are transfer students admitted for classroom space only. In this situation, students are notified at the time the offer of admission is made so the decision about whether to enroll at Richmond can take this issue into account. There is no rule from the University that requires any student to live on campus; therefore, if you prefer to live off campus, that preference will be honored by the University.
