Transfer Admission

Richmond accepts transfer applications for the fall and spring semesters.

  • We typically receive approximately 300 transfer applicants for 50 spaces in the fall semester.
  • The applicant pool for spring semester is smaller, with approximately 100 applicants applying for 15 spaces.
  • First-year students cannot apply for spring admission.
  • Before beginning the application process, transfer students should be sure they are eligible for transfer admission.
  • Currently, admitted transfer candidates are offered need-based aid at 100% of their demonstrated financial need.
  • Transfer students are not eligible for merit scholarships but could earn departmental scholarships after enrolling.

Eligibility to Transfer

Transfer candidates must have completed a minimum of 6.82 transferable units (equivalent to approximately 24 semester hours) at another college or university. You may submit your application before the minimum requirements have been met, but the coursework must be in progress at the time of your application. Transfer students are not accepted in the middle of their first year of college.

Minimum Requirements

All transfer students must have completed mathematics through at least Algebra II and at least two years of the same foreign language. If those requirements were not met in high school, they must have been met at the college level. Students must maintain a college GPA of 2.0 to be considered for admission.

Applicants must be in good academic and social standing at their current institution and eligible to return.

Admission Review

The transfer committee reviews all applications holistically. Successful applicants in our pool have demonstrated consistent academic progress. Both high school and college credentials are requested for review. The weight placed on the high school transcript varies based on the amount of completed college work — it is weighted less heavily as more college coursework is completed.

Applicants should demonstrate engagement in a challenging liberal arts curriculum and are encouraged to use our General Education Requirements as a guide when choosing courses at their current institution.

All applicants are admitted to the School of Arts and Sciences and enroll as undeclared. The transfer committee does not admit applicants into a specific school or major. Upon enrollment and meeting with your academic advisor, transfer students can begin the process to declare a major.

Applicants interested in the Robins School of Business should visit their website for more information. The Robins School of Business is accredited by the AACSB and will accept business credits only from business programs with the same accreditation.

Transfer of Credits

The Registrar’s Office will conduct a full evaluation of the transferability of coursework, minus the current semester’s courses, only for admitted transfer students. This can help students in trying to decide whether to accept the University’s offer of admission. A final evaluation of coursework will be conducted by the Registrar’s Office and will be made available to enrolling students electronically prior to registration.
