Understanding Transfer Admission at Richmond
Considering transfer admission to a college or university can feel overwhelming. Whether you are looking for a better four-year fit or making the next step from a two-year program, we are here to help.
Get Organized: Every institution will ask for different credentials, and it is important to thoroughly read the website to understand the individual requirements for each school to which you are applying. Begin thinking about who you need to contact to access and submit these materials as soon as possible.
Timing: The biggest hurdle to a successful application is an incomplete checklist. All applicants to Richmond can track their submitted materials on their Spider Portal. You should make every effort to submit your application along with all supporting application credentials by the deadline. Coordinating between several different departments and offices at one (or more) institutions takes time and likely follow up. Start gathering your materials early, so you allow yourself a cushion to submit them on time. We understand that things happen: transcripts get lost in the mail, attachments are sent to spam folders, professors procrastinate on sending a recommendation letter. Despite your best efforts, there will be instances when credentials arrive after the deadline. That’s okay. We offer a credential deadline (listed at the top of your Spider Portal) to provide additional flexibility.
Check your email and your Spider Portal: After you submit your application, don’t assume you are done! We will send instructions to access your Spider Portal. Do not delay logging in to review your application checklist. Additionally, the transfer admission committee will be in direct communication with you about any additional materials that we might need. Check your email often for updates.
Ask questions and follow up: As you are requesting documents and materials from various offices, you might have to follow up to ensure a transcript is sent or form is completed. Don’t assume one request will lead to a result, and don’t be hesitant to follow up if our office has not received a credential. Processing can take anywhere from 5-7 business days after we receive a document. However, if you still aren’t seeing a credential reflected as “checked” on your Spider Portal, reach out!
